of Strategic Planning
When the process of strategic planning is carried out in the right manner, the benefits of strategic planning can be summarised as follows:
- An increased chance of survival and prosperity of the organisation
- Increased cooperation between members of the management committee
- Increased cooperation between members of the management committee and key volunteers in the organisation
- Less political in-fighting and factions
- The process will increase the likelihood of better communication with key stakeholders such as sport parent bodies, government funding agencies and sponsors
- The setting of agreed goals and objectives will stimulate and renew then interest of key volunteers to take responsibility for work and take ownership of strategies for developing the organisation
- Coordinate the efforts of many individuals so that they
work better together
- Enabling members, office bearers, staff and funding agencies
to have a clearer view of the organisation's present position
and future direction
- The existence of a written plan will enable organisation staff to be briefed more thoroughly on the main work
activities within the organisation
- Enable better decision making about expenditure, funding
and finance
- Assign responsibility to individuals for activities and
processes contained within the plan
- Enable the organisation to recognise the need to put contingencies
in place
- Enable the organisation to consider the existing or possible future threat of competition from other organisations.
Failure to undertake strategic planning
A failure to undertake strategic planning could lead to the organisation:
- Failing to recognise opportunities to be competitive in the market place
- Providing little or no opportunity for the organisation's membership to be involved in determining the programs and services organised by the club
- Failing to notice or take account of major business risks
- Disapproval of the manner in which the committee manage the organisation
- Failing to be relevant to the community's need
