The Case of Trudy Gardener
In July 2001, the National Netball League introduced an interim ban on pregnant women playing in the National Netball League.
South Australian netballer Trudy Gardner, captain of the prominent Adelaide Ravens, lodged a complaint with the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission alleging that the ban was in breach of the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth).
The Commission determined that "While some players may have particular health reasons that restrict their participation, a blanket ban may unfairly discriminate against some women."
The ban against pregnant women playing netball has been lifted.
