Tutorial 23: Creating and Using IF Functions

Video tutorial 23: creating and using an IF functionThis 5 minute video tutorial provides instruction in how to create an IF Function. If you are using this tutorial with the resource "Creating a Financial Model", you should consider watching tutorial 22 first.

The video shows one application of an IF Function that is used in conjunction with Check Boxes (which is the subject of Tutorial 22). The video explains the three components essential to any IF Function:

  1. The logical test (in the illustration below it is colour-coded GREEN)
  2. The value to use if the logical test is TRUE (colour-coded RED in the illustration below)
  3. The value to use if the logical test is FALSE (colour-coded BLUE in the illustration below)

Explanation of IF Function

The video tutorial shows one practical application of an IF Function but there many other ways to construct the logical test, and therefore many ways to use an IF Function. In the above example, the '= sign' is used but the signs that can be used include:

Operator Description
= equals
> greater than
< less than
< > not equivalent
<= less than or equal
>= greater than or equal
